Casual Villainry Excerpt – The Death of Ybaxi Reroza

The death of Ybaxi Reroza (Public)

Name: Esret Fahan’Chakar

Position: Head record keeper

Cycle: 8

Subject: Ybaxi I

Greetings,

It’s with regret that I must announce that Ybaxi Reroza, the head of mechanics, has been found dead. As everyone is well aware, Reroza was among those who chose to undergo the cybernetic limb surgery after Quinn Osannus and her team produced favorable results. The cause of death was a fault in one of these artificial limbs which resulted in a powerful shock being sent through his body, causing severe internal burns to his organs and nervous system. We aren’t prepared to say whether or not the fault was intentional, although we can’t ignore how suspicious it is that the one casualty was the head of the field.

Given what we know, it would be easy to perceive Osannus as the most likely culprit. However, while she was the one who started the cybernetics project, she is not the only one with knowledge on it. Several others have been trained to perform the surgery and that she had it performed on herself first makes it unlikely that she would commit a lethal sabotage. We also have to consider the fact that this surgery is usually performed by a group, meaning that if one did purposely create a fault then another should have been able to spot it. This leaves us with three possibilities; that either someone else in her group is behind the fault, that this was coordinated by several members of the group or that a flaw has been exposed from the outside. It’s too soon to come to a conclusion yet, so refrain from pointing fingers until we have more information.

The possibility that this could be a retroactively exposed flaw may rightfully be concerning to others who have also undergone the cybernetics surgery. To them, I would repeat the sentiment of waiting for more information to come before going and having your limbs removed. The fact that Reroza was the one casualty of this makes the possibility of a targeted fault much more likely, so don’t get all paranoid right off the bat.

Cycle: 8

Subject: Ybaxi II

Greetings,

Obviously, the death of Ybaxi Reroza means that a new head of mechanics is going to have to be chosen. Mechanics will have no input during this process, the new head will be chosen from a neutral discussion performed by the heads of the other fields. To control the disarray, the new head will be chosen before investigations on this case finish. We’re aware of the likely possibility that Reroza was killed with the motive of the killer being to take his place and are willing to go ahead despite the risk of choosing them. It’s been decided that the importance of instating a figure to guide the field through this is greater than that risk. If they get what they want then maybe they’ll use their time to be more productive instead of finding creative ways to kill their superiors.

The current most likely candidates for head are Quinn Osannus and Geralt Brayce. Osannus’ drive and mentality were what spurred the entire field of mechanics into getting off their asses and matching the productivity of the other fields. While her project having a direct hand in Reroza’s death does hurt her chances, it can’t be argued that she was the spark that got this field off of the ground. Brayce, on the other hand, isn’t as popular a figurehead but his close work with Reroza and breakthroughs with regards to understanding the technology of this ship put him in a favorable position. He’s proven himself a valuable asset and he’s demonstrated the same type of drive as Osannus, especially after the initial split in the field.

Nothing is determined yet but don’t be surprised if you see one of these two as your elected superior soon. Lastly, to reiterate, don’t work yourselves up over this murder mystery. The fact of the matter is that Reroza’s dead and if we can’t find the killer within a cycle the case will be dropped. We aren’t here to waste time pretending to be investigators, we’re here to destroy the universe. If we can expose the killer, they’ll be punished for wasting their time doing something counterproductive and nothing more. We have to keep focused on the goal at hand, so if any of you are planning another killing then I implore you, please don’t waste our time.

Talks with Quinn haven’t gone well. She believes that I’ve been pressured by Vyxys and the other heads and turned on her completely. I’ve tried to tell her that’s not the case but she won’t give me the time, she’s become so absorbed in working more and more and more. Ybaxi’s death has only made things worse, the moment she found out she took off one of her own arms to scrupulously check what could be wrong with them. She clearly didn’t do it but she’s blaming herself, she thinks she’s not doing enough, that she isn’t enough. I think she realizes that the cybernetics project is, in the grand scheme, just a supplement to the universal destruction effort, so she can’t waste a lifetime doing it. That doesn’t mean she can just rush it this way and either complete her work or die trying.

I want to be on her side in the discussion of who should be the new head but I just can’t. The weight of the position would break her, she’d try to work even harder and shoulder all of the field’s work herself. She would try to fix every problem and ensure no mistake were made ever again. If an issue came up in a project she had nothing to do with she would blame herself for not being attentive enough to those around her. Letting her be head would kill her, so I have no choice but to support Geralt.

On that subject, I want to say that Geralt was the one who killed Ybaxi. He was the primary driving force against Quinn’s cybernetics project in the first place and he’s obviously never been happy with the position he was put in. He’s trying to take control, it’s too convenient to assume that he just saw the flaws in Quinn’s project before I did. He gives me a bad feeling, though I have to admit I don’t really have any grounds to accuse him of anything. Everyone in here has their own flaws and dissatisfactions, I just have a bias against him. For all I know he doesn’t know anything about cybernetics nor does he want to, so how could he be the one to sabotage a prosthetic? The only way it could have been him is if the shock didn’t come from the prosthetic at all.

I’m thinking too much about this. In the end Esret is right, any time spent trying to solve this case is time wasted. If Geralt is to blame and he gets the position then he’d have nothing to gain from killing anyone else. Ybaxi being gone is a shame but there’s no issue so long as things are progressing. He was an agreeable person but it was failure in his leadership which led to the initial indecision and eventual split in the field. I almost feel bad admitting it but perhaps this is all for the best.
